چکیده

● Baskground and aimr The scarcity and unpredictability of active pollinators during late winter in temperate areas tends to favour extended flowering seasons and increased floral longevity in early blooming species, which are usually pollinated by diverse sets of insects. Daphne laureola is a gynodioecious woody perennial that flowers from January to April in southern Spain, a period characterized by cold temperatures, frequent rains and irregular snowfalls.

Exploring local borders of distribution in the shrub Daphne laureola: Individual and populations traits

Biogeographic models predict that marginal populations should be more geographically isolated and smaller than central populations, linked to more stressful conditions and likely also to a reduction in density of individuals, individual growth, survival and reproductive output. This variation in population features could have important consequences for different aspects of plant ecology such as...

Dissecting components of flowering pattern: size effects on female fitness

Flowering synchrony is essential for plant reproductive success, especially in the case of small-sized populations of self-incompatible species. Closely related to synchrony, flowering intensity influences pollinator attraction and pollinator movements. Thus, a high flowering intensity may increase pollinator attraction but, at the same time, may also increase the probability of geitonogamous p...

Pollinator preference and pollen viability mediated by flower color synergistically determine seed set in an Alpine annual herb

Gentiana leucomelaena manifests dramatic flower color polymorphism, with both blue- and white-flowered individuals (pollinated by flies and bees) both within a population and on an individual plant. Previous studies of this species have shown that pollinator preference and flower temperature change as a function of flower color throughout the flowering season. However, few if any studies have e...

Flowering phenology in subalpine meadows: does climate variation influence community co-flowering patterns?

Climate change is expected to alter patterns of species co-occurrence, in both space and time. Species-specific shifts in reproductive phenology may alter the assemblages of plant species in flower at any given time during the growing season. Temporal overlap in the flowering periods (co-flowering) of animal-pollinated species may influence reproductive success if competitive or facilitative in...
